The band Hell, live in concert

Bookmark and Share

Hell were the opening band on Accept's Stalingrad World Tour.
The tour started in Paris on Good Friday, April 6 2012.
Well, a concert of Hell was an unexpected way to commemorate the crucifixion and death of Jesus at Calvary.
But Good Friday is no holiday in France and the Holy Week is not observed so not many people noticed this coincidence.

So, you might be wondering who is this new band called Hell?
Well, they're not a new band at all, they actually started back in 1982! That's a perfect example of will and perseverance.

A series of unfortunate events led the band's split in 1987: They were about to release their record when the label went bankrupt, an event followed by the suicide of singer and guitarist Dave Halliday.
Nevertheless they left a lasting impression on many musicians, inluding Andy Sneap, known as the guitar player from Sabat, but mostly for being one of the most important producers in metal.

The band reunited in 2011 with Andy Sneap on guitars and David Bower, the brother of guitar player Kev Bower, on vocals.
They finally recorded their first album, called Human Remains.
Andy Sneap produced the records Stalingrad from Accept, so they invited Hell on their Tour across Europe, and the first stop was in Paris.

Musically, Hell has a very recognizable sound from the heaviest NWOBHM bands, but with some darkerelements.

The only band they made me think of was Mercyful Fate. The sound and the complex structure of the songs sounded a bit similar, but they voice was very different to King Diamond's.
In other words, even if Hell is a classic band that can be assimilated to the NWOBHM, they do their own thing and they're hard to categorize. They remain like a ufo among Heavy Metal bands.

Visually, the show was very unusual for a support band.
Hell customized the stage by covering their amps with stained glass representing unholy scenes.
Singer David Bower is also known as David Beckford on his television career, and he used all his actor skills tonight.
More than a singer, he acted like a Master of Ceremonies, changing clothes frequently, dressed like a priest or with a monk cape, but always wearing a crown of thorns.
He had a wireless microphone, so he can use body language and move his hands when singing.

Despite all these efforts, the band didn't have a very good sound. Furthermore, thay might have a long career, but haven't played many gigs recently.
Certainly, not everybody in the audience enjoyed Hell's show, but I'd say this is a band to watch out closely in the future.
Their album is very good, so with a little more experience and a better sound, they'll certainly become killer on stage!

Next band to play was Accept. Click here for some Accept pics and a review.
